DANA eNews – November 2022

This edition of DANA’s eNews is out and full of the latest news about International Day of People with Disability 2022 (IDPwD), advocacy, the NDIS, the Disability Royal Commission, and COVID-19 information. There is plenty happening across the disability advocacy sector, with recent updates being released around consultations and reviews; celebrations and commentary around IDPwD, activities by sector organisation’s around systemic issues, and the important progress in the DRC’s public hearing and submissions process.

International Day of People with Disability 2022

International Day of People with Disability is held each year to increase public awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disability. This year, International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) will be held on Saturday, 3 December 2022, and will focus on the theme: Transformative solutions for inclusive development: the role of innovation in fueling an accessible and equitable world. Many disability advocacy organisations are taking the opportunity to promote awareness and connection, with events, campaigns, and content focusing on important topics around the theme of innovation, inclusion and development.

There are some significant recent updates about the NDIS, systemic advocacy, the DRC public hearings and many events and opportunities for the community.

Issue Spotlight: Emergency Planning and Crisis Response for People with Disability

Prior to 2018, there were few studies that examined emergency planning and crisis response from a disability perspective, but there has been growing attention on this topic in recent years. This article presents some of the resources that have been developed around emergency planning and crisis responses that consider the needs of, and barriers facing marginalised communities and isolated individuals with disability, including projects developed by disability advocates and advocacy organisations.

Share your stories with the Disability Royal Commission

People with disability, their family, supporters and advocates can share experiences of violence, neglect, abuse or exploitation with the Royal Commission. This helps the DRC learn more about the problem and how to help prevent it in the future. But 2022 is the final year for people to share their stories with the Disability Royal Commission. The final date for submissions is 31 December 2022.
