This edition is full of the latest news about advocacy, the NDIS, the Disability Royal Commission (DRC), and COVID-19 information. There is plenty happening across the disability advocacy sector, with recent updates being released around consultations and reviews; reports around key sector issues, sector activity and campaigns around systemic issues.
As part of its contribution to the review of the NDIS, DANA has commissioned Dr Simon Duffy, an expert on disability support systems and human rights, to provide an international perspective on Australian progress with the NDIS. Dr Duffy is one of the founders of the global Self-Directed Support Network. In 2013, Simon argued that “the NDIS could be one of the most important international developments in the advancement of the human rights of people with disabilities in recent years.” However, he also said that the scheme had several important design flaws.

More than 70 organisations and individuals call on the Australian Government to work with people with disability to reimagine the Disability Services Act 1986 to enshrine the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in this joint submission by Disability Representative Organisations. In late January 2023, DANA and AFDO collaborated on a brief Pre-Budget Submission calling for continuity of advocacy funding (including systemic advocacy and representation) as the Disability Royal Commission comes to an end, and we await recommendations and responses of government.
