As part of its contribution to the review of the NDIS, DANA has commissioned Dr Simon Duffy, an expert on disability support systems and human rights, to provide an international perspective on Australian progress with the NDIS. Dr Duffy is one of the founders of the global Self-Directed Support Network. In 2013, Simon argued that “the NDIS could be one of the most important international developments in the advancement of the human rights of people with disabilities in recent years.” However, he also said that the scheme had several important design flaws.

The DANA submission to the Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability (the Royal Commission) about independent disability advocacy is informed by the collective knowledge and experience of member organisations. In addition to exploring the context, key barriers and challenges for the disability advocacy sector, this submission outlines our recommendations to support fulfilling the obligations inherent in the implementation of the purpose and principles of Australia’s Disability Strategy (2021-2031) and National Disability Advocacy Framework (2022-2025) to achieve desired outcomes for people with disability throughout Australia. In particular, the recommendations seek to eliminate their risks of experiencing violence, abuse, neglect or exploitation
IDPwD 2022 Roundup: Celebrations and Stories
International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) was held on Saturday, 3 December 2022, with the theme being: Transformative solutions for inclusive development: the role of innovation in fueling an accessible and equitable world.
In Australia, IDPwD celebrates the contributions and achievements of the 4.4 million Australians with disability, both visible and invisible. Across Australia, organisations have been hosting events and facilitating discussions around people with disability this month.
