Public hearing to investigate COVID-19 impact
The next Disability Royal Commission (DRC) public hearing will investigate the experiences of people with disability during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.The Chair Ronald Sackville AO QC said unless there are significant changes in circumstances, the hearing will take place in Sydney in August. ‘The hearing will gather evidence from people with disability, peak advocacy groups, public health and disability experts, as well as government representatives.'
First Nations People with Disability issues paper and advisory group
The latest issues paper released by the Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability seeks information about the experiences of First Nations people with disability.
The issues paper asks 12 questions to help people and organisations to provide responses.
Restrictive Practices issues paper published by DRC
The DRC wants to know about the effects of restrictive practice on people with disability. They are also interested in understanding how laws, policies and practices around restrictive practices can be improved to better prevent and protect people with disability from violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation.
National Counselling and Referral Service Extends its Areas of Support
Blue Knot Foundation will be elevating its promotion of the National Counselling and Referral service as a key trauma-informed support for people with disability, family members, carers, advocates and workers who have experienced or witnessed abuse, neglect, violence and exploitation. Anyone who wishes to access this support does not need to make a submission or have any prior involvement with the Disability Royal Commission.
Employment issues paper published by DRC
The Royal Commission wants to hear about people’s experiences across a wide range of employment settings including paid work, independent contracting, self-employment or apprenticeships as well as segregated employment settings and community based enterprises in First Nations communities.
Rights and Attitudes issues paper published by DRC
The Rights and Attitudes issues paper seeks feedback about community attitudes towards people with disability and about how well advocacy is working for people with disability, to prevent or help respond to violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation.
Disability Royal Commission calls for urgent action
The Royal Commission is calling on all Australian governments to ensure that responses to COVID-19 include dedicated strategies and take all necessary measures to protect and support people with disability.
Australian governments should seek input from people with disability, leading disability experts and advocates in developing their dedicated strategy, and in particular, in its COVID-19 Coordination Commission initiative.
