Shaping the next chapter of disability advocacy in Australia

Disability Advocacy Network Australia (DANA) is leading an important initiative to strengthen independent disability advocacy across the country. For years, DANA members have emphasised the need for adequate and secure funding to sustain and strengthen independent disability advocacy. Government investment is critical to achieving the shared objectives outlined in the National Disability Advocacy Framework 2023-2025 and its Disability Advocacy Work Plan, endorsed by Federal, State, and Territory governments.

Consultations on a new individual disability advocacy program

In addition to leading the Future of Advocacy project, DANA has recently been engaged by the Department of Social Services (DSS) to support consultation and engagement with the disability sector in the design for a new individual disability advocacy program. This initiative follows recommendations from the Disability Royal Commission, with the Australian Government committing an additional $39.7 million over four years to establish a new individual disability advocacy program.

DANA will be facilitating consultations with advocacy organisations funded through the National Disability Advocacy Program (NDAP), NDIS Appeals, and other individual advocacy providers over the coming months. Through meaningful consultation, we aim to ensure that advocacy managers, advocates, and people with disability help shape this program, making it responsive to the needs of those who depend on independent advocacy.
